What Makes a Good Advertisment?

Before starting production on our advertisment, we thought it was essential to research the fundamentals of what makes a good advertisement.

Firstly, the main purpose of an advert is for the product to sell and to create more profit than what the advert initially cost to produce and distribute. Advertisers have to try and 'absorb' or 'immerse' the consumer into the product itself. As advertisers will want to squeeze as much product information into a short space of time, it may be difficult for the consumer to process all of the information. In order for an advert to be successful and more beneficial for the consumer, it may contain some of these attributes:
  • Originality
  • Celebrity Backing
  • Persuasive
  • Target Audience
  • Creative use of text and colour
  • Comedy
  • Brand name/image
These example attributes are what can help make an advert be successful, if you can persuade a consumer to go out and purchase your product after viewing an advert, then the product will be deemed as a 'success'.

Pitch

During this A2 project we aim to produce an advertisement campaign, marketing a sports drink product. In order for our advertisement campaign to be successful, we have to research existing products in this area and to also gather a deeper understanding of our target audience. This will also give us ideas and inspiration, during the development process in our future advertisements.

My partner and I knew that we wanted to include multiple shots of our product to make it more memorable for our viewers. We also wanted to show various fast paced shots, to get a sense of energy, or agility from which ever fitness theme we choose. From our own knowledge of the product, we know that the adverts have to include some sort of physical aspect, whether being sports, or fitness.

We don't want to include any diegetic sound in our advertisements, which would include any dialogue or sound from in film objects. So that leaves us with choosing an appropriate soundtrack for our advertisement. We decided that it should be a fairly new song, which also features an up-beat track that could be used when promoting fitness.

Overall we want to achieve an easily recognisable advertisement campaign, that clearly dictates our message to the viewers. This may result in us producing multiple videos and other various types of advertising methods, to make our campaign feel more professional and to reach a much broader audience.

Introduction To My A2 Media Project

As a class we were set the task to plan and produce a music video, an advert, or a documentary. The first task was to get into groups and decide which media category we were going to produce. I chose to work with Chris Dean who was in my group last year when creating our AS thriller opening clip - 'Parity'. We were tied between creating a music video, or an advert, but decided on making an advert as we had much more creative ideas.

The video below is from our AS thriller opening - 'Parity'.
